God has made Himself known to us through Christ. As believers He is with us, His Spirit in us and we have constant fellowship with Him. It is our responsibility to keep our lives on track by listening to and obeying His word.
We will not move forward beyond the last instruction that we received from the Lord.
Prosper & Thrive
Even when we choose to follow Jesus and obey His word we still have to live in an environment shaped by the bad choices that other people make. God wants to show us how to prosper and thrive in the midst of that environment. One picture of this in the Old Testament is when the Lord called Elijah to go stay by the brook Cherith where He would provide for him in the midst of famine brought on by the disobedience of the Israelites. We may not think that living by a brook being fed by birds sounds very prosperous, but compared to death by starvation it was a great option!
Like Elijah, when we listen to God and obey Him by sowing our gifts and talents in caring for others; He will find a way to care for us.
Toward His Promises
He placed Elijah next to a brook that flowed toward the Jordan River, in the direction of God’s promises, setting Him in the right direction to obtain the good things that He had for him. When the brook dried up God sent Elijah to the widow of Zarephath for provision. In meeting the prophet’s need for food God reached out to save a widow and her children. She believed that she had nothing and all she could see was that she was going to die, but that was not true, and even in her despair she fed the man of God from what little she did have, enough flour and oil for one last meal.
When we are facing despair or feeling that things are hopeless, we can also use what we have to move in the direction of God’s promises.
Like the widow of Zarephath we can create a new picture for our lives that includes a good future full of hope as we believe in and obey Jesus, the living word. God framed the world with His words and we can frame our future with ours. We need to stop waiting and start doing something with the “flour and oil” that God has given us in order to move forward and become the people who do great exploits for Him.
- Are you prospering and thriving in the environment where God has placed you now?
- Have you identified the gifts and talents (flour and oil) that God has given you and are you using them to care for others?
